Violence Against Women and Girls – a National Emergency

The United Nations backed 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is running until 10 December, and it is a welcome spotlight on these abhorrent attacks and the initiatives to stop them.

Women are much more likely to suffer gender-based violence than men. Indeed, violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the UK is on the rise, according to latest figures. An estimated one in 12 women will be the victim of VAWG every year, and one in 20 adults will be a perpetrator. It has been described as ‘a national emergency’.

In this detailed article, i2 technical and tradecraft subject matter expert Seth Cooke explains how intelligence analytics technology can play a vital role in tackling the issue. By using i2 software already available to them, constabularies can detect in their data a key aggravating factor in violence against women and girls: the offender’s use of misogynistic language, says Seth. Identifying offender misogyny is important because the offender’s abusive words at the time of offence are deeply tied to the victim’s experience of the different types of VAWG harm threats.

Seth gives a fascinating insight here into his work on VAWG with Avon & Somerset Police. This case study illustrates how intelligence analytics can help prosecute the perpetrators of violence against women and girls. Seth argues for a national adoption in law of gender-based violence, and says i2 software can make possible the inclusion of misogyny as an aggravating factor in sentencing decisions
