Case Study: New Techniques for Identifying & Isolating Hackers

Mapping of complex hacker networks

For too long hackers have felt secure hiding behind the disconnect between the real-world and cyber world.  Using BotNets, hackers have too easily been able to conceal their identities.  Or they were, before i2’s Cyber solution provided a way to bridge that gap.  In a new case study about cyber risks, i2 looks at how Dr. Craig Valli and his research students at the Edith Cowan University School of Computer Security and Forensics  used our Cyber solution to identify and isolate hackers.  READ MORE

i2 Customers Provide Perspectives on Information Sharing

I want to use my first blog post to talk about what we’ve been hearing lately from our customers. Recently, we solicited feedback from our North American customers with the intent to take the pulse of our users and improve our understanding of the issues that are at the forefront of the intelligence and law enforcement communities.

Interestingly for us, information sharing tools were the most cited factor in effectively accomplishing respondents’ missions. This is, of course, one of the reasons we got into this business in the first place. READ MORE

Revealing Links: The Power of Social Network Analysis – A New i2 White Paper

Social Network Analysis (SNA)  emerged from academia years ago.  And it is proving to be an effective way for intelligence teams to analyze and understand complex networks of entities, such as individuals or organizations, by measuring or weighting the interactions between them.  In our latest white paper, i2’s intelligence experts provide an SNA overview, how it can be used to enhance traditional analysis techniques and maximize the value of data; and its potential for use by a wide range of organizations to analyze and visualize a variety of network data.  Learn how SNA can be employed as another investigative tool that complements traditional forms of analysis. By Way of Introduction

As I sat down to write this inaugural blog entry, it struck me that I have not read many first blog entries, so I wasn’t quite sure of the etiquette. Do I introduce myself, or just jump right into some weighty topic as if I’ve been writing for years. I checked around and found a few interesting  “firsts”. On 20 January 2009, Macon Phillips posted the first entry to the WhiteHouse.gov blog and briefly introduced himself and outlined key priorities for the Administration’s new media efforts. I’ve read Steve Johnson’s product marketing articles for years, so I looked back to see that he jumped right in to content with his first post. ConnectedCOPS.net lists several blogs and I particularly like the introduction Detective Chief Inspector Mark Payne from the West Midlands Police in the UK introduced his blog by stating, “Communication is the cornerstone of policing.” READ MORE

Cyber Security – Hackers are the new “good guys” as cyber war escalates

Computer hackers are no longer viewed as outsiders living in their parents’ basements — occasionally dangerous, but usually more of an annoyance to government cyber security professionals.  In fact, the governments of the U.S. and the United Kingdom are actively recruiting them as their newest weapon to answer their malicious counterparts who are members of organized crime rings and hostile nation-state cyber armies. The U.S announced this year its first-ever “Cyber Challenge,” a nationwide contest which mirrors a similar competition China has been running for five years. Organizers say the Cyber Challenge is designed to identify young people with exceptional computer skills and inspire them to join the shorthanded ranks of specialists needed to protect government, military and industrial cyber infrastructure.
